Day 3- Looks like we get to enjoy a weekend procedure free :)

Well, looks like we have some pretty great news!  Landen's teams have reviewed his history along with the echo from this morning and after a ton of conversation decided that the best course of action is to let him continue on his own over the weekend :)

The reason they did the echo this morning was to check something called a PDA.  This valve typically closes after 48 hours from birth and when it does, his condition will stabilize from there.  Meaning that after it closes, they will have a better picture of Landens "standard/normal" (to him) condition.  What the teams saw today was that the PDA was almost closed, yet he was still very stable.  His O2 sat remains in the 90s and his heart rate shows no signs of distress along with normal breathing.  So the plan is to wait.  Wait until that valve closes the remainder of the way and reassess.

Here is where things get a little complicated so stay with me!  Once the PDA (highlighted in green below) is closed, he will basically be done with post birth transitions regarding the heart (as far as I know).  Even if he is still stable, the teams feel as though his ASD (hole between the atriums highliged in red below) is still to small and is going to do long term damage to his left atrium and his lungs.  Since this is the case, they still want to do a catheter procedure to open that ASD.  Once the ASD is opened more, this will increase blood flow to his pulmonary artery yet it will decrease the pressure in the left atrium.  With increased blood flow in the pulmonary, this will actually cause to much blood traveling to the lungs.  In order to counteract that, they would place a band (area marked in yellow) to help reduce the flow down to expected levels.

So....what does all this mean to Ashley and I?  It means that we get a couple days to help him develop!  It also means that we have a couple days to see what God can do here.  If you need something to pray for, here is what I would suggest.  Praying this would mean that he wouldn't need any procedures AT ALL for the foreseeable future (I think probably a couple years...but I'm not the expert).  Please pray that Landen's PDA closes over the weekend.  Pray that his ASD is opened much more than it is now helping reduce pressure in his left atrium, and also that his pulmonary artery restricts flow all on its own to compensate for these other changes.  We would sooo love to see the team run a test on Tuesday only to find out that waiting was the right decision and that they need to do nothing :)

I have seen some pretty miraculous healing in my own life, so I know He is capable of so much more than we can imagine or plan for!

Thank you all!  Enjoy your long weekend, and think of us up here in Boston whenever you enjoy a ice cold beer, cookout, swing a golf club, ride in the boat or just time with friends.  Not because we want you to feel bad for us, but because we want you to know we are right there with you in spirit, but here enjoying our first weekend with Landen in the family :)

Enjoying the journey,
George, Ashley, Madison, Lyla and Landen

PS: Jonny even had a chance to swing in and see his new nephew!  So glad to walk the halls with my brother here :)  He even had a chance to shake hands with Dr.Wayne Tworetzky (sorry Darla)!  Love you Jonny
