Well, I hope everyone had a chance to relax a bit this weekend! I know up here in Boston it was a beautiful Saturday and a nice rainy Sunday...who doesn't need one of those every once in a while. Skip and I had a chance to take a drive up to Maine with the panels of the jeep. Even though the reason for our travel was sad, it was nice to have the time with some fresh air.
Today Ashley, the girls, Skip and Lori, my Mom and Rich Bame dropped in to see Landen! What a blessing it was to share him with the family today. Best of all, Lyla had a chance to hold him for the very first time! She was so excited that she could hardly wait to get in the chair. She quickly washed her hands and had barely dried them before jumping to the chair and putting her arms out...it was the cutest thing ever! Although, I think the only thing that made it cuter was the fact that she sang "rock a bye baby" to him :)
Well, I wish I had some really great news to share. Unfortunately things are a little more "interesting" here at the Children's CICU. Landen was trending great! In fact the attending had mentioned early Sunday AM that she thought that he may be ready to move to the floor sometime that Sunday. I think that the overall numbers they were watching were looking OK (on the high range of OK) and the nurses were walking around with him...it just looked like he was good to go. Unfortunately his lactic acid came back pretty high (7.2 and 2.0 is normal), so they figured it was probably a bad draw, so they pulled another but at an artery for better accuracy and that came back at 6.9. This caused them to run an echo which showed two things. The procedure results were unchanged regarding his ASD and all looked good with that, but they also could see that he had to much blood in his lungs. This, combined with his decreased appetite over the past 24 hours, high O2 saturation, and high respiratory rate is showing us that he is likely going to need the next surgery. We will wait till the AM to find out for sure, and I will update as soon as I know.
For now they placed a PICC (peripherally inserted central catheter) in his arm, he is on a CPAP to help with his respiratory rate and also some medications to help calm his heart down. Basically he has been fighting quite a bit with his body, compensating for the blood in his lungs which is why his lactic acid was high.
Tomorrow AM they will likely run another echo to check the status of his lungs. My gut however is that Dr Tworetzky will recommend we do the surgery sooner rather than later. If I had to guess, he will likely wait till Wednesday as the surgical team has there weekly board meetings on Tuesdays to discuss procedures with patients and brainstorm. There are no facts to base my opinion on here, only theory. For now we will just have to wait and see what Monday brings.
Please keep up the prayers! Even though he may not be where we want him, he is still such a strong little man already. He is working hard, so lets make sure we all work hard for him on our end :)
Enjoying the journey...and a journey it is!
