A bumpy couple days

So many of our family and friends have been praying for our little Landen,George, myself, Maddie and Lyla and we can't Thank you all enough!!!! It is all your prayers, support and words of encouragement that have helped us to hold strong to our faith and trust in the Lord. He is our creator and great physician and it is His will and plan for Landen that we trust in.

Landen has had a "bumpy" week. He struggled with acid reflux and is now on prilosec to help with that and a continuous NJ feed as well ( a feeding tube that goes past his stomach and into his small intestines to help relax him until the prilosec kicks in). Earlier this weekend they noticed signs of a possible infection and pulled labs from his pic line.  Since then that culture came back positive for infection.  Also they noticed a bump of fluid just above his incision and were concerned of infection. A culture was drawn and it is showing signs of the same bacteria from the pic line which means it is also infected, and likely linked to the origional source which we have yet to determine. Before they got the results they immediately started him on an antibiotic. This morning at rounds they noticed that he had an irregular heartbeat, ventricular tachycardia (VTac). They started him on a dose of lidocaine to help regulate his heartbeat along with another medication but those did nothing to regulate his rhythm back to normal. They proceeded with an echo to see if they could see anything and noticed some fluid buildup around his heart which creates pressure and likely caused his rhythm to change.

I'm light of those discoveries it was determined that a he would need to be sent to the catheter lab to undergo another procedure.  They intubated him and sent him down for the procedure with hopes that they could drain as much of the fluid around his heart as possible as well as pull a culture so it could be tested along with the other two (chest and pic line samples).  The procedure went well and they were able to drain a significant amount of the fluid.  This also resolved the VTac issue and his heart is now pumping "normally" with a regular rhythm.  For now they will continue to monitor him through the night and pull him off the ventilator in order to eventually extubate him.

Our prayer is that by removing what fluid they could, combined with the antibiotics he will start to make much better progress.  If the culture does come back positive, there is a possibility they will want to open his chest AGAIN in order to surgically remove the infectious material from his chest.  We are hoping that this will not be necessary.  We would covet your prayers over the next 24 hours as our little fighter is so strong and clearly has the power (through your prayers) to get through this!

With thankful hearts we send this update to all of you who are praying.  Keep it up!  This is just another day on the journey and apparently our job is to patiently wait for the next step.

Enjoying the journey,
Ashley, George, Maddie, Lyla and Landen

PS:  Ashley wrote most of this post, but had technical difficulties, so I finished.  Is a this because it's hear heart you read here, and I want you all to see how blessed I am to have her as my partner in all this.  We are a team! :)
